THE REGION ...

piemonte (italy)  Piedmont, in Italian, means at the foot of the mountain.

With 46 different DOC and four DOCG areas, Piedmont is the region that produces the largest number of best known, noble, and world-appreciated prize-winning wines, such as Barbera, Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Malvasia and Asti Spumante among others.

Another distinguished characteristic of Piedmont is that most of its wines are produced on family estates made up of relatively small parcels of land. The production of strong reds is predominant in this landlocked, mountainous region and are the perfect complement to the rich and hearty cuisine featuring white truffles, fonduta, which is a variation of the Swiss cheese fondue, rice, meats, pastas and stuffed vegetables.

BOVIO

Bovio was founded in 1976 by continuing what was already an established wine making company. In 1976 the property consisted of approximately a mere 3 hectares of vineyards planted with Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. With the acquisition of new vineyard plots in La Morra, the holdings increased to 10 hectares in 1983. Continued efforts to grow even bigger resulted in the need for more help so Gianfranco Bovio enlisted the job to handyman Walter Porasso who it is still present in the company as a director. Today, the vineyard area is 20 hectares throughout La Morra and Castiglione Falletto of Nebbiolo from Barolo, Dolcetto and Barbera.

F.LLI CIGLIUTI

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Piedmont. The varietals of Nebbiolo which can only be used in the blend is the Michet, Lampia and Rose' sub varieties and must be grown in the communes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive and the San Rocco Senodelvio district of the commune of Alba in the province of Cuneo.

Serraboella is the most famous and important vineyard in the eastern part of the municipality of Neive thanks to the progress made of Renato Cigliuti. For decades Renato's name has been synonymous with Barbaresco from Serraboella. Over time the Barbareschi from Serraboella have expressed personality that is well above average.

The wines possess fine structure, firm tannins and excellent cellar-ability. The vines stand on the slope facing the village of Neive below the Serraboella road that goes over the ridge of the hill from the Cigliuti estate. The rows mainly face west and south-west. The altitude ranges 250 to 320 meters above sea level.

The Cigliuti family has owned the estate for five generations, however, it was not until 1964 that Renato began bottling and selling their own wine. Renato, the present winemaker, with he help of his wife and daughters; Claudia and Silvia use most of their acres to produce world acclaimed wines. The Cigliuti family is a talented and a well-matched family team. Every wine from Az. Agr. F.lli. Cigliuti are distinctly powerful and elegant. They showcase wonderful Nebbiolo and Barbera austerity, a seductive harmony and a lengthy, savory finish. One of the leaders of quality from Piemonte!

SOCRE’

The birth of Socré occurred in 1871, when Marco Piacentino's great-grandfather Giovanni l'Alessandrino bought this land in Barbaresco. Every since Socré initially sold it's grapes to private citizens of Barbaresco and various wine cellars in the Barbaresco zone, and only produced a small percentage of wine for family consumption. In 1999 all of this came to an end when Marco decided to gradually increase the amount of grapes used for wine production and invest in equipment and machinery for his own bottling.

The decision to expand does not stop here. Rosella and Marco Piacentino have been enlarging the business also by planting new vines in the original vineyards in Barbaresco in the famous cru of Roncaglie. They have purchased other vineyards in Neviglie in Barbaresco and Cisterna d'Asti in Roero where they have planted Barbera, Croatina, Cabernet and Merlot.

Wines such as Croatina and Cisterna d'Asti were also a matter of interest and attention to Marco. Marco's idea is to keep local tradition alive in offering clients of Socre’ traditional varietals that offer a fresh alternative to the land's more renowned wines such as Barbera d'Alba, Barbera d'Asti, Langhe Nebbiolo and the raisined wine Camplongh, as well as a dry white wine called Via Nuova.

The vineyards of Socre’ in Barbaresco (about 3 hectares) are just below the wine cellar, and are the heart and soul of the estate. The land slopes downwards quite steeply, with western and southern exposure; the land's altitude is between 250 and 290m above sea level. The earth is mainly clayey, with a limestone base and sharp alkaline reaction.

The pride of Socre’ by far is again, the cru of Roncaglie Alto. As early as 1880, Roncaglie was already recognized as one of the best and most important areas for Barbaresco production, also mentioned in Lorenzo Fantini's fundamental publication on Viticulture and Oenology in the Province of Cuneo. Argilo-calcaire soils, perfect exposition (South and South-west), mild winds and great temperatures fluctuations, give rise to deep and elegant wines. The vineyards (with ages ranging rom 10 to 50 years) are planted with a density ranging from 4500 vines per ha up to 8000 vines per ha.

Roncaglie Alto is a very respected area just below the vineyard of the renowned Angelo Gaja vineyard called Sori' Tilden. Separating the two vineyards is the road from Alba before the hamlet of Tre Stelle bearing amazing views of the vineyards of Barbaresco. The vines of Roncaglie were planted in 1959 by Marco's grandfather Giovanni and are still bearing incredible fruit.

Guido Busatto has been brought in as the enologist in charge to help make the Socre’ a top player in the world of wines from the Le Langhe. Before this the Roncaglie cru has never taken advantage of how great this vineyard really is except for Angelo Gaja who has never named Roncaglie on his labels. Because of this, Roncaglie has not had the privilege in the past of displaying such honor on the front label by any estate. All this will change. The vineyards of Socre’ has huge potential in making world lass wines and this is exactly what Socre’ is capable of making…world class wines.

FORTETO DELLA LUJA

Certified Organic

Forteto della Luja is situated in Loazzolo in the Asti part of Langhe and has made respect for the environment its guiding principle. Loazzolo is the smallest DOC in Italy and is situated about 600 meters above sea level. Forteto della Luja is several things; a home, a vineyard, a large garden and most interestingly a World Wildlife Federation Oasis. The wines made here are organic. Forteto della Luja has even constructed Piemonte’s first photovoltaic solar energy wine cellar. The fields and vineyards and buildings are of indescribable beauty.

The physical location of Forteto della Luja makes all of this possible; it sits directly on the vortex which divides the Monferrato region from the Langhe region. From this mountain top position outside of the picturesque village of Loazzolo, one can see Alessandria and Nizza Monferrato to the northeast, Canelli straight ahead, and Barbaresco to the northwest. To the south, the Apennine guard the door to the Mediterranean.

The soul of Forteto della Luja is the Scaglione Family. The property has been in the family since 1826 and a small part of the property even dates back to the 1700’s. Giancarlo, Silvia and Gianni Scaglione are passionate about their home and their legacy and this is proven through the quality of their wines. Their wines faithfully reflect the terroir through the use of mainly native grape varieties grown chiefly on limestone and marl soils at a density of 8,000 vines per hectare.

ALBERTO VOERZIO

Alberto Voerzio was born in Bra in 1983 and now lives and works in La Morra. He is the young cousin of Roberto and Gianni Voerzio. As a child he developed a passion for the land and love for the vineyards. This later provoked him to attend studies in enology solidifying his passion for wine and wine making. Later, Alberto attended the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Technology, gaining experience abroad in France and working at a winery in La Morra. With these experiences, he matured and gained a fundamental knowledge in wine making, enabling him to start his own winery in 2006. Alberto works full-time for this passion and he devotes his time in the vineyards as a grower "vigeron". He follows the whole process from the vineyard management to his wines final destination in the world. The vinification is done spontaneously without the addition of yeast, enzymes or activators. The Barolo is aged 24 months in 25% new barriques, 75% used up to 3rd passage. After the aging in barriques, the wine is returned to stainless steel tanks, where it is left at 4 degrees Celsius for about 15 days to drop out naturally any remaining sediments and then racked 2 more times in the months before bottling. All the wines are unfiltered.
