languedoc-roussillon (france) The history of Languedoc wines can be traced to the first vineyards planted along the coast near Narbonne by the early Greeks in the fifth century BC. Along with parts of Provence, these are the oldest planted vineyards in France. The region of Languedoc has belonged to France since the thirteenth century and the Roussillon was acquired from Spain in the mid-seventeenth century. The two regions were joined as one administrative region in the late 1980's. The Languedoc-Roussillon region shares many terrain and climate characteristics with the neighboring regions of Southern Rhone and Provence. The region stretches 150 miles from the Banyuls AOC at the Spanish border and Pyrenees in the west, along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea to the Rhone River and Provence in the east. The northern boundaries of the region sit on the Massif Central with the Cévennes mountain ranges and valleys dominating the area. Vineyards in the Languedoc are generally planted along the coastal plains of the Mediterranean while those in the Roussillon are to be found in the narrow valleys around the Pyrenees. DOMAINE des ENFANTS
Domaine des Enfants was founded in 2006. More than half of the 23 hectares of vines were planted before the Second
World War, and some of the vines were even planted over 100 years ago. From the beginning the intention was not only
to make great wines, but to mainly preserve the cultural landscape and heritage of the region. Domaine des Enfants
strives for manually-processed wines with a high quality standard. The aim is to set themselves formidably and
convincingly apart from the profit-yielding mass-industry consumer wines inundating the wine market today. The
principle to follow a near natural management results in a very complex way of working. The vineyards at Domaine
des Enfants are very steep with a narrow tilling. The old vines are placed a distance of 1.5m apart, which makes
it impossible to pass with a tractor. Most of the vineyards are ploughed by horsepower, and the vines are weeded
and soughed by hand and picket. Exhausting hard labor is the rule instead of mechanics for mere efficiency. This
is the only way to obtain healthy, lively soils with good root vigor; the foundation for great wines. The wines are
first and foremost authentic and characteristic wines of the Languedoc Region. They possess a clear and complex aroma.
Their density and texture is the result of old vines with small output, not of excessive extraction and residual sugar.
The round tannin provides the wines with structure and length, without covering their elegance and finesse. They are
harmonic wines which, despite lots of extraction possess cleanliness and freshness. The belief of the Domaine is to
not be the "winemaker" but to allow the wines to express themselves with a result of what the vineyards create during
the hard work in the vineyards during the growing season. Human intervention is always at a minimum; with the natural
process of the wine making giving precedence. |
