THE REGION ...burgundy (france) Considered by many to be the heartland of French wine, the gentle countryside of Burgundy is a joy to visit. The vineyards are home to two of the world's most treasured grape varieties - Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and in the southern Beaujolais area, we find the quintessential, refreshing Gamay. Many of the cellars in the northern areas of Burgundy define the image of a quiet, mysterious place full of ageing wine in barrels. Moving further south, the bucolic picture of French wine asserts itself in the rolling landscape of Mâconnais and Beaujolais. Everywhere here, it's the people who farm, make and market the wines who matter. DOMAINE des NUGUES
Gérard Gelin's 15 hectares of vineyards called Domaine des Nugues (pronounced newgg) has developed
an extraordinary following, and justifiably so. The vineyards are bordered on either side by
Morgon to the west and Fleurie to the east. The vines average forty years in age and the quality
of the fruit grown on this hillside site is extraordinary. There are even some vines that have
reached an age of over a century. The wines made here are never artificially adjusted and are
richer and denser that many Cru Beaujolais. As keeping with the finest tradition, all fruit
is hand-harvested and whole-cluster vinified. Tasting of only the pure fruit flavors of
unadulterated Beaujolais, they evolve beautifully with bottle age. |

DOMAINE de SUREMAIN
Domaine de Suremain is located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy in the village of Mercurey and is
now in its 7th generation of family wine making at the Chateau du Bourgneuf. In this beautiful landscape of the
Val d'Or, the appellation of Mercurey is the most famous in the Côte Chalonnaise. The area of production for Suremain
consists of 20 hectares, producing only wine from the Mercurey appellation. The diversity and nuances of the soils
are expressed through a range of five different Premier Cru. Harvesting is always done by hand and sorted at the winery.
Fermentation takes place in open oak and is punched down twice per day. Maceration is 8-15 days depending on the vintage.
Each 1er Cru is aged in oak barrels for a year; 10 to 15% new. The wines are allowed to rest for 18-24 months in the bottles
before being released into the market. Domaine de Suremain is recognized as one of the top producers of Mercurey. |

FRANCOIS GAUNOUX
Domaine Francois Gaunoux consists of 10 hectares spread out between the appellations of Pommard, Volnay, Beaune, Meursault
and Puligny-Montrachet. The Domaine itself is situated in Meursault in the heart of the Cote d'Or. Wine making began by
the father of Francois; Henri Gaunoux. Francois began working at the small Domaine at the age of 15 and he continues to
run the Domaine together with his daughter Claudine. As one of the more unique producers in Burgundy, the Domaine embraces
a combination of modern and traditional techniques. In fact, Francois tends to lean more towards modern techniques where
his daughter, Claudine, insists to remain more traditional in approach to wine making. The father and daughter team are in
no doubt experts in vinification with a strong belief that the best wines begin with the best grapes. Harvesting is always
done by hand. The great wines of Domaine Gaunoux are crafted with complete care and complete attention to detail. The wines
are true expressions of each appellation that only a master of his craft of wine making can passionately express through a
single glass of wine. |
