THE REGION ...

ribera del duero (spain)   Ribera del Duero is a Spanish Denominación de Origen (DO) located in the country's northern plateau and is one of nine wine regions within the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is also one of several recognized wine-producing regions to be found along the course of the Duero River.

The region is characterized by a largely flat, rocky terrain and is centered on the town of Aranda de Duero, although the most famous vineyards surround Peñafiel and Roa de Duero to the west, where the regional regulatory council or Consejo Regulador for the denominación is based.

The primary grape of choice of Ribera del Duero is Tempranillo.

FESCENINO

Bodegas y Viñedos Juan Manuel Burgos S.L. is a small winery located on the Southeastern area of Ribera del Duero in the village of Fuentelcesped in the very outer limits of Ribera. Only 2 km further south and vines are not able to grow. 30 hectares of Tempranillo (Tinta del Pais) are the solid base of Frescenino.

At 34 years of age Juan Manuel Burgos is the only owner and wine maker. His background in the world of wine dates back to his great grandfather. 10 years ago Juan Manuel inherited a portion of some very interesting old vineyards, some of them pre-phelloxera and as old as 60 and 80 years. Coincidentally at that time, Manuel had already started planting his own vines. Manuel began taking old rootstock and grafted them onto his newer plants in order to have some authentically older cloned Temparnillo. Manuel contests that the results can be perceived in his wine.

Manuel made his first wine in 2000 at Cachopa; a winery he was working in at the time. Needless to say it was a very nice surprise for the press and connoisseurs alike. Manuel instantly received ositive articles and reviews in Spain and next year in the US and Europe.

Four years later for the release of his 2004 vintage Manuel had his own winery. With the winery in operation he was more than ready to improve his already highly demanded wines. The vintage 2005 produced a total of 60.000 bottles out of his 30 hectares that were in full production. His work in the vineyard is very strict. Implementing low yields, proper canopy management, no irrigation and strict attention to detail, Manuel takes his work seriously.

The average altitude for Manuels wines is 800m above sea level. The soil is poor and consists of clay and sand mixed with limestone and rock. The river Duero is 4 km north and provides he vineyard with good ventilation. As far as the winemaking is concerned, Manuel is minimalist and uses his instincts. Manuel believes that even though every year the weather changes the raw material is the same. He knows if you look for the best every year even by different means you still get a consistent style and personality for every vintage.

Manuel uses the best tonelleries from France for his Fescenino. The barrels used are 90% French and 10% American. 20% second use and 80% new.

A great value!
