Children in Nutley are big fans of dance. Here in town, the well known Dancers in Motion, formerly known as Debbie McCann's School of Dance, was launched in 2000 by the owner and director, Taheerah Allen.

Allen, a big fan of dance, was dancing as young as 3 years old. Her love for dancing led her to compete in New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania, where she won prestigious awards along the way.

She was the Miss American Star in 1987 and the Miss EPA in 1994, 1995 and 1996.

Dancers in Motion of Nutley win the Star Studio Award at the Star Systems Talent Competition for the second year in a row for a five-day cruise.

Also among top placements were Top Overall Super Star Junior Duet, Angelica Laracuente and Eunice Suba; Top Super Star Line; Top Teen Super Star Large Group; Top Mini Solo and Top Mini Duet.

Dancers in Motion in Nutley, directed by Taheerah Allen, win several top honors at Star Systems' Talent Competition in East Brunswick.

Among the honors are the Superstar Studio Award for a five-day cruise, Ultimate Achievement Award, Teen Title, Teen Overall, Top Teen Duet, Junior Overall, Top Junior Duet, Top Junior Group and Top Mini Group.

Bloomfield girl tours with 'Billy Elliot'

Sofia Rubino went from Bloomfield to Broadway.

Sofia, an 11-year-old Oak View School student, joined the cast of the North American Broadway Tour of "Billy Elliot The Musical" earlier this year.

At the time of this interview, Sofia was on the Canadian swing of the tour, said her mother Deanna.

"She's going to finish up the tour in the United States," she said. "Then this summer, we're going international to Brazil."
